About the Euro2020ParallelUniverse project

June 2020 saw many of Europe's top leagues get the ball rolling again after the spring's hiatus following the global coronavirus outbreak. However, in an alternative universe, one spared a global pandemic, it would have been the Euro 2020 tournament which would have been taking all precedence that summer.

The idea for this website was inspired by the idea of being able to provide truly exclusive game-by-game coverage of a tournament that never happened. Whilst in the real world of June 2020 we prepared for canned crowd noise and cardboard cutouts of supporters in otherwise empty stadiums, the world of Euro 2020 offered everything that we took for granted before. We set about to cover all 51 matches as our team of reporters went everywhere, from London to Baku to Bilbao and back to Baku.

Some may well dismiss 'what if' thinking as utterly pointless. Of course, it is, in almost all respects. But hopefully for some it will bring amusement and, regardless of your thoughts on international football, the slightest illusion that there was, as had been the plan, tournament football under the summer sun in 2020.

And if, further down the line, it succeeds in making some football pedant in some pub quiz somewhere in the world misremember Euro 2021 as having England getting past the quarter-finals then all the better.
